AWS Datazone Overview

A data management service that simplifies data sharing and governance across organizations, enabling teams to catalog, discover, share, and govern data stored across AWS, on-premises, and third-party sources.

Key Features

Data Cataloging: DataZone helps organizations create a centralized catalog of their data assets, making it easier to find and understand data.

Data Discovery: It facilitates data discovery by using machine learning to automate cataloging and accelerate data discovery.

Collaboration

Collaborated cross-functionally to launch this service. Closely worked with product managers, API engineers, Front engineers, Backend Engineers, SDMs, & Solution Architects.

My Role

Designed data cataloging and discovery from scratch. The features were launched in October 2024, with thousands of active users within a month.

Results

The service was initially available for limited use (14K+ users) in November 2022. I leveraged data from that launch to inform key decisions for our general launch in October 2023, which scaled to over 100K users. The launch was successful, securing 15+ major businesses that adopted our service.

Features in the Catalog Management

This project portfolio has high-level evolution of key features from the preview launch to the GA launch. The preview designs were primarily based on my initial understanding of the problem and features. However, for the GA launch, I incorporated customer feedback by analyzing usage data and directly engaging with users. This allowed me to identify key issues and implement solutions effectively.

AWS Datazone Preview Launch

Datazone was preview-launched in November 2023 to internal users and select clients. Learnings & feedback from this preview was used to refine and improve the design ahead of the full launch in October 2024.
